On May 14, the Ministry of Environment (ME) announced its “Plan to Promote Circular Use of Batteries” at the Economic Ministers’ Meeting.
The initiative aims to turn spent batteries—expected to surge due to the rise of electric vehicles and renewable energy—into high-value resources, helping to secure a stable supply of critical raw materials.
Korean industry stakeholders have long called for policy support to address weak demand for recycled and reused battery products and to respond to global regulations such as the EU Battery Regulation.
In response, the ME has worked closely with experts, local governments, and industry since last year to develop practical, field-oriented measures.

The ME stressed that using circular batteries is essential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, bolstering resource security, and enhancing industrial competitiveness. It also expressed its commitment to supporting Korea’s leadership in the global battery recycling industry.
