Planned Revision of Safety Standards for Child Car Seats in Korea

Korea is set to revise its safety standards for child car seats to enhance child safety and align with international regulations. Here's a detailed look at the upcoming changes

1. Purpose of the Amendment

Child restraint systems (car seats) are among the most critical products for child safety due to the high risk of harm during car accidents. These revisions aim to strengthen safety standards and ensure better protection for children.

2. Key Details of the Revision

  • Adoption of International Standards:
The updated standard, UN/ECE/R129, will replace the previous standard, UN/ECE/R44.
  • Enhanced Safety Requirements:
New safety standards will incorporate test conditions for two-point retractable seat belts, reflecting the latest advancements in safety technology.

3. Implementation Timeline

  • Effective Date: January 1, 2025
  • Transition Period:
During the transition, the previous safety standards in Annex 3 may be applied alongside the revised standards until December 31, 2026.

These updates align Korea’s regulations with global standards, ensuring that child car seats meet the highest safety requirements. Manufacturers and exporters must prepare for these changes to ensure compliance and market readiness.
